When should I replace my caravan's tyres?
Your tyres carry everything, but wear quietly. You can check the tyre age of your caravan via the DOT code on the sidewall. Even if the tread looks good, replace your tyres after 6 years at the latest, as rubber hardens and tears. Also check the tread depth of the tyres. At least 2 mm is legal, but 3 mm is safer. Caravan tyre replacement costs vary between €80 and €150 per tyre, depending on size and type.
How much tyre pressure for your caravan?
It's important that your tyres are and stay in top condition, which is why it's always good to check tyre pressure before a long trip.
Not enough pressure? Risk of burst tyres. Too much pressure? Poor driving comfort.
What the ideal tyre pressure is for your caravan depends on its weight:
- Tyre pressure caravan 750 kg: usually between 3.0 - 3.5 bar
- Tyre pressure caravan 1500 kg: usually between 3.5 - 4.5 bar
- Tyre pressure caravan 2500 kg: maximum 5.5 bar for the Expedition and Nordic.
It is important that you always consult your caravan's manual! It always specifies the tyre pressure. Don't have a manual? Then you can also use a caravan tyre pressure calculator.
Do you want to do your own caravan maintenance?
No job is too small if you know how. Start by maintaining caravan window rubbers. Coat these with silicone spray, against drying out. For caravan air conditioning maintenance, clean filters monthly and check drains. For maintenance on your caravan's mover, polish the rollers and lubricate the axle regularly.
Never forget:
- Check lights and brakes before every trip
- Clean the caravan inside and out
- Check gas hoses for cracks and/or kinks
